Herald Times Reporter (Manitowoc, Wisconsin)
March 24, 2012

MANITOWOC — Jaime Martinez of Manitowoc, whose family and friends have been fighting his deportation, got on a bus in Chicago Friday morning on the first leg of his journey back to Mexico.

"He got deported this morning. We watched the bus pull away," said his wife, Jennifer Martinez, sobbing into the phone Friday.

She is "destroyed" by the decision, she said. [...]

David González, Undocumented Immigrant From Costa Rica, Spared Deportation Due to Gay Marriage

Huffington Post
March 12, 2012

David González, a gay Costa Rican immigrant, was spared deportation on Thursday based on the fact that he is married to a male U.S. citizen.

This is the first case of this nature in Texas--where an undocumented immigrant is permitted to stay in the country based on same-sex marriage-- according to LGBT advocates in the state. [...]

Detention Is No Holiday

By Edwidge Danticat, New York Times Op Ed
March 27, 2012

LAMAR SMITH, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is presiding over a hearing Wednesday on new guidelines for immigration detention that were issued last month and are now beginning to go into effect. The official (and facetious) title of the hearing is “Holiday on ICE,” in reference to the more humane treatment undocumented immigrants should now receive after being picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Mr. Smith, a Republican from Texas, and members of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement, which is holding the hearing, seem to think the United States is too nice to the immigrants it detains. We are being too generous in deciding to give them safe water, an hour a day of recreation, and off-site medical care if they are in danger of dying. [...]

A Palestinian in Indefinite Detention --10 Years Ago in the United States

By David L. Wilson, MRzine
March 24, 2012

The 66-day hunger strike of Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan brought overdue attention to Israel's practice of detaining Palestinians for lengthy periods without criminal charges. It also brought attention to the same practice in other countries, including the United States, where, as Salon.com columnist Glenn Greenwald pointed out, indefinite detention is "now firmly in place" for terrorism suspects.

It's important to remember that the U.S. government detains people for indefinite periods without bringing charges, but Greenwald misses an equally important point: the United States was doing this long before 9/11 and the "War on Terrorism."

On any given day, the Department of Homeland Security is holding some 33,000 non-citizens in federal detention centers, in federal prisons, or in county jails. [...]

Immigrant Steel Workers March Against Unjust Firings

By David Bacon, Truthout
February 23, 2012

Berkeley, California - Two hundred immigrant workers, their wives, husbands, children and hundreds of supporters marched through downtown Berkeley February 17, protesting their firing from Pacific Steel Castings, one of the city's largest employers. Starting at City Hall, they walked for an hour past stores and homes, as bystanders often applauded. Teachers and students at a Montessori school along the route even came out to the sidewalk to urge them on.

At a rally before the march started, fired worker Jesus Prado told the assembled crowd, "I worked for Pacific Steel for seven years. We've organized this March for Dignity because we want to stop the way they're stepping on us and treating us like criminals. We came here to work, not to break any laws." [...]

LISTEN: Joe Arpaio Will Make Arrest On Obama Birth Certificate Once He Figures Out Who Forged Documents
by Mitch M., Arizona's Politics
March 22, 2012

"When I go to the toilet, I make international news." With that comment, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio bemoaned what he called "probably the biggest censorship blackout in the history of the United States."

In the radio interview last week, he also reiterated that he found "probable cause" that President Obama's birth certificate and related document are fraudulent; when asked if arrests were forthcoming, he said that he first needs to find out who is responsible.

He made the comments on Roger Hedgecock's radio show. [...]
